About the "The Most Uncommon Flower in t he World"
A myth about a beautiful, dark tulip was thriving in the 19th century, with tulip breeders trying hard to create a black tulip. It also inspired the 1850 novel by Alexander Dumas, titled “The Black Tulip": a powerful tale about love, jealousy, and obsession. In the story, a magnificent prize is offered to the first person who would manage to produce a pure black tulip. The book further inspired the myth of the black tulip, while in the real world, Dutch growers continued working for years to create a black tulip. A few tulip breeders came close with tulips in dark purple shades, but the project of creating a completely black tulip is today considered failed.
