About the "The Most Valuable Flower in t he World"
In this collage, a seventeenth-century illustration of the Semper Augustus Tulip is combined with AI versions of the same. The Semper Augustus was a tulip species that due to a virus infection had blood-red flares on its white leaves. The remarkable beauty of this virus-stricken flower made it incredibly sought-after, and the market went out of proportion: the bulbs were sold for exorbitant amounts that would have purchased a house on the most fashionable canal in Amsterdam, or clothed and fed an entire Dutch family for half a lifetime. Due to the sickness of the flower species (its beauty stemming from its disease), this flower species died out, and went he economical value. of the flower collapsed, it caused a financial crisis that had a big impact on the society of the time. The specific flower species disappeared, and does not exist today, though other similar-looking "broken" tulips have later been cultivated.
